Concept: Muladhara, whose Sanskrit name means “root support” or “foundation”, is the first chakra. Symbolically situated at the base of the spine, it is associated with the element Earth and represented as a four-petalled lotus. It is regarded as the foundation of the subtle body and the seat in which Kundalini lies dormant. Its stability provides the necessary ground for energy to ascend through the other centres.

In the ART OF THE SPIRIT, rootedness is not attachment to matter, but full presence within embodied existence. SPIRIT neither opposes the body nor escapes the Earth: it manifests through them. The more deeply consciousness settles into its foundation, the more fully it can open without dispersing.

The root thus becomes the beginning of ascent: that which supports elevation and makes spiritual life concrete, stable and active in the world.
