Concept: Sahasrara, whose Sanskrit name means “thousand-petalled”, is the crown centre.

In the best-known model today, it is presented as the seventh chakra; in many tantric traditions, however, it is understood as the centre beyond the six principal chakras. It represents the culmination of Kundalini’s ascent: the point at which Shakti reunites with Shiva, duality dissolves and liberation, moksha, is attained. Rather than a centre of action, Sahasrara is the symbolic threshold of unitive consciousness and bliss.

In the ART OF THE SPIRIT, liberation is neither an escape from the body or the world nor the erasure of individuality: it is freedom from identification with the self as a separate centre. Sahasrara becomes the Mount of Transfiguration, the apex at which the physical, emotional, mental and superconscious dimensions are recomposed into unity, and the visible and invisible cease to be perceived as opposites.

The self does not disappear, but ceases to consider itself isolated: no longer the individual as a boundary, but Life recognising itself through every form. To be Life, everywhere.
