Acentric Phase I emerged from my personal interpretation of grattage, a technique developed within Surrealism by Max Ernst and subsequently explored in material and gestural directions by artists such as Antoni Tàpies and Simon Hantaï. Begun in 1995, this phase has never entirely run its course as a pictorial practice: it remains latent and necessary, ready to re-emerge as a means of filtering out the superfluous and reaching deeper layers.
In my research, scraping and removing pictorial matter does not merely produce marks and textures; it becomes a process of inner and outer clarification. It is an act of catharsis: as the surface loses material, the image and consciousness acquire depth and visibility.
The various experiments gave rise to two fully realised series comprising twenty-four works: Circo-Stanze and Vicoli Verticali (Vertical Alleys). Circo-Stanze is a play on the Italian word circostanze (“circumstances”), splitting it into circo (“circus”) and stanze (“rooms”). The works transform the circumstances of life into the symbolic “rooms of a circus”, portraying paths that follow and return to one another, presenting their lessons again until they are recognised. The Vicoli Verticali represent the material and immaterial forms of assistance capable of interrupting the short circuit and raising consciousness towards a new stage of evolution.
