My painting begins with grattage, within Acentrism: scraping, subtracting, resetting, restoring order. It is an act of reset, necessary to clear the field of what interferes. Over time, however, the alignment of the different levels of being makes that gesture increasingly unnecessary. This is where painting moves from acentric art to ART OF THE SPIRIT: when the field no longer needs to be “de-centred”, it can become directly a space of communication and communion. I use the word “download” for an intuition that presents itself as a whole before being translated into thought, feeling, gesture and form. The more personality interferes, the more it restricts what might otherwise flow through it, like a straw placed before the force of Niagara Falls. In ART OF THE SPIRIT, the work therefore consists in keeping this transmission as intact as possible, so that the different levels may communicate with one another coherently. In painting, this process takes form through colour, sign, matter and gesture. Painting is no longer an act of reset, but the place where what is inwardly perceived can enter into relationship with matter and become presence, communication and communion.
