Concept: Vishuddha, whose Sanskrit name means “pure” or “completely purified”, is the fifth chakra. Symbolically situated in the region of the throat, it is associated with the element Space, or Ether, and represented as a sixteen-petalled lotus; its seed mantra is HAM. Space is the subtle principle through which sound can travel and become speech. In contemporary interpretations, Vishuddha is also associated with communication, listening and creative expression.
In the ART OF THE SPIRIT, communication becomes com-union: the word does not merely convey meaning, but opens a space of resonance between inner experience and the world, the individual and the whole.
Sound arises from silence and makes perceptible what has not yet taken form. When the word is freed from noise, automatism and self-assertion, it becomes the CREATIVE FIAT: it does not merely describe reality, but participates in its manifestation.
Vishuddha thus becomes the threshold of Celestial Creation, the point at which inspiration becomes sound, word, sign or gesture. The invisible becomes communicable, and the individual voice becomes an instrument through which SPIRIT enters into relationship with the world.
