The VERTICAL SKIES series was conceived to shorten the distance between our breath and the Sky. In children’s drawings, the sky often appears as a horizontal band, a kind of roof placed above the world. To encounter it, we must raise our gaze, as though it were distant and sometimes even unreachable. Yet the sky is not only above us: it is all around us, in the air that envelops us and that we breathe.
The plural SKIES does not multiply the Sky into separate realities, nor does it deny its unity: it acknowledges the plurality of thresholds through which it manifests itself. The visible sky, the inner sky and the spiritual Sky are not separate places, but different modes of relation between the finite and the infinite. There are not multiple transcendences, therefore, but multiple thresholds of access to the same dimension.
The distinction between air and sky is therefore less physical than perceptual, symbolic and intimate. To speak of SKIES is to render the geography of transcendence acentric: no longer a single “above”, remote and absolute, but countless openings which, beginning with the body and breath, bring all that lives into contact with what lies beyond it. Making the skies vertical means releasing them from remoteness, allowing them to descend into the realm of the body and recognising them as presence. In VERTICAL SKIES, the ART OF THE SPIRIT renders the boundary between matter and transcendence permeable: the Sky is not a distant destination, but a dimension that passes through all that lives.
